This is kinda long but....
In late June and early July, 1776, in Philadelphia, a small group of bright and forward thinking men collectively determined that it was time for the British colonies they represented in the Continental Congress to go their own way and break from the mother country. On July 4, 1776, they issued a declaration to that effect. They risked literally everything they had on an idea whose time had come. They were statesmen who sensed they could do something important, something great, something that would have a profound effect for generations to come.
A great many people now say they believe that America is a horrible place, ruled by an uncaring elite class whose sole interest is preserving their power, both here and around the world. That is, unfortunately, to some small extent true. However, until people start risking their lives walking across the desert in July, or having themselves shipped in stifling containers for weeks, to leave this country and get someplace else, I still think we are doing a pretty good job, at least compared to the rest of the world. There are a lot of places I would like to visit, but I can't think of any place else I would rather live. As long as that remains the case, I will continue to be proud to call myself an American.
Happy 4th of July. Enjoy, but be safe.

I couldn't agree more. We're not perfect, God knows, but that's the beauty of it--I can say that without worrying about harm. I could even get off my butt and do something about it without worrying about harm.
Those statesmen were automatically considered traiters to the Queen for daring to want change, an act punishable by death, in order to form a country where we don't have to worry about that sort of thing.
I'm babbling, but what can I say? I'm happy and proud to be an American. :)
